Leadership Changes Within DoIT Core Operations

As we continue down our path of transforming DoIT into a higher performing and more contemporary IT organization, we must evolve our thinking and approach to the services we offer. One essential aspect of this change is becoming more of a learning organization. We need to identify and understand the best ideas, practices, and technologies and then apply them here in a thoughtful and planned manner.  

In order to grow as a learning organization, we need a coordinated and well-planned professional development program to seek out, create, and coordinate technology learning opportunities for DoIT staff, and more broadly for the technology community at UW-Madison.

Therefore, I have created a new role in our organization — Senior IT Learning Consultant — that will develop technology learning programs for DoIT leadership, staff, and where appropriate the campus IT community. 

The essential responsibilities are:

  • Identify significant trends within the field of information technology that merit learning opportunities.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum for IT learning.
  • Curate material from a wide variety of sources including higher education consortiums, academic journals, and industry publications.
  • Coordinate technology brown bag talks and host guest speakers on relevant topics.
  • Co-sponsor IT Connects programs.

We are fortunate to have a DoIT leader with this expertise in both professional development and technology: Steve Krogull. Prior to his role as the SEO Director, Steve was the assistant director for Learning Solutions within Academic Technology. Steve’s educational background includes earning a BS and MS from Southern Illinois University with an emphasis in educational media and instructional design, and PhD coursework at Marquette University in Educational Psychology with an emphasis on adult learning. Steve’s education, experience, and passion for learning enable him to launch this new initiative for us.

I appreciate the time Steve has already spent designing a purposeful approach for DoIT to become a learning organization and extend my thanks for his willingness to take the lead and make it happen. Steve’s new role begins December 10, 2018.  He will continue to report to me in his new role.

Steve’s new position requires that I appoint an interim leader for SEO. After careful consideration, I have decided to appoint a leader from outside of the UW to lead SEO.

Tadd Smejkal will assume the role of interim Director – Systems Engineering and Operations (SEO) effective December 10, 2018. Tadd has more than 20 years of professional IT experience and has held a number of senior leadership roles in software delivery, IT operations, customer support, and cloud adoption.  Most recently, Tadd structured and led the Cloud Operations department of WTS Paradign, a software-as-a-service company, supporting a global customer base.

Tadd’s leadership experience spans many critical areas of information technology including the development and operations of cloud-based hosting services, promoting cloud adoption on Amazon’s AWS service and Microsoft’s Azure platform, modernization concepts like infrastructure-as-code, and more automated practices for DevOps.  He leads a 24/7 operation with staff in multiple countries to support systems that service corporations across North America and abroad.  He also has experience in software development, application integration technologies, enterprise-level Oracle application implementation, and vendor management. Tadd earned his BS in Information Systems from Edgewood College and has completed numerous managerial and technical training programs.

Tadd and Steve’s appointments will help DoIT continue our transformation to be a trusted broker of IT services, using contemporary approaches to service management, technology delivery and operational excellence.
