Did you know that photos are protected by copyright, even if they are posted on the Internet?
With a few exceptions, it’s actually illegal for you to re-use a photo taken by another person without permission. The penalties for photographic copyright infringement are severe. A single infringing use of a copyrighted photo could result in thousands of dollars in penalties. So be safe, and don’t put yourself or your department at risk by violating someone else’s property rights.
How can you safely find and use photos?
The UW Campus Photo Library contains thousands of recent low and hi-res photos depicting the UW Madison campus, and the people there.
If you need photos from further afield than that, try WikiCommons, a collection of over 36 million freely usable media files.
