Update: Google Sites transitioning Dec 2022

Google recently updated their timeline to give Classic Sites owners more time to migrate their sites to the new Google Sites platform. Below is their new timeline:

  • December 1, 2022 (previously June 1, 2022): Owners will no longer be able to edit any remaining classic Sites.
  • January 1, 2023 (previously July 1, 2022): Classic Sites will no longer be viewable unless they are converted to new Google Sites.

Effective January 2023, Google will transition Classic Google Sites to their new Google Sites platform. This move will impact about 300 individuals on campus.

Google Classic Site owners will receive a targeted communication about the new timeline during the week of June 6. They will still be encouraged to move their Classic site to new Sites early. General and targeted reminder emails about the transition will begin again in October 2022.

What you need to know

  • Before December 2022, individuals who own a Classic Site should use the Classic Sites Manager to transition their site to the new platform. This tool also provides a method to delete or archive sites they no longer need.
  • If no action is taken before January 1, 2023, their remaining Classic Sites will be automatically downloaded as an archive and saved to their Google Drive as a draft for later review. Their site will not be deleted, but will not be viewable unless they take action to publish it on the new platform.

Background

Google Sites is a free drag-and drop website builder included as part of Google Workspace. Google introduced a new version of Sites in 2017 and recently detailed a timeline to transition Classic Sites to new Google Sites in 2022. Google has been prompting Classic Site owners to transition to new Google Sites for at least a year.
