NetID login process changing for enhanced security

To better protect the intellectual property and personal information of faculty, staff, and the digital assets of our campus, UW–Madison is adding a second verification step to the NetID login process for web-based applications. This process, called multi-factor authentication, offers additional protection to your digital identity and is commonly used in many businesses.

Multi-factor authentication, provided to UW–Madison by Duo Security, adds an additional step to the NetID login process. The first steps for logging in will remain the same: you will enter your NetID and password. The additional step utilizes a smartphone or token (also called a fob) to verify your identity.

Requiring two different channels of authentication helps prevent unauthorized logins to your account, even if your password has been compromised. The enrollment process is easy, and using the app or token is simple.

We have begun to roll out the service by school, college and division to faculty and staff (including full time employees who are also students). The goal is to complete the rollout to all UW–Madison employees by March, 2019. All students enrolled in degree programs, including student employees, will be brought on board by the end of 2019.

When your school or college is ready to move to multi-factor authentication, you will receive additional communications. Your implementation partner will send you information regarding how this will impact you and the steps you will need to take.

Please keep in mind that special accommodations (particularly during exams) may need to be made for full-time employees who are also students. If they need to log in to their NetID account in order to take a test, and they are enrolled in multi-factor authentication, they would need to be allowed to use their smartphone or token/fob to log in. Options are being considered to ensure that this process is not disruptive when all students are onboarded.
