Update your Duo Mobile app by Mar 31

All UW–‍Madison students and employees must update their Duo Mobile app to the latest version by March 31. After that deadline, older versions of the app will no longer work.

Update your mobile app today to keep your access to essential university systems — including your email, Canvas courses, Zoom meetings, timesheets and VPN (virtual private network).

What’s happening: Duo Security is ending support for older versions of its mobile app to improve security. After March 31, versions earlier than 4.85.0 will stop working for multifactor authentication at UW–‍Madison.

Update your Duo Mobile app

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android)
  2. Search for “Duo Mobile”
  3. Select Update
  4. Wait for the download and installation to complete

Troubleshooting

If the update won’t install

Your phone’s operating system may be too old. The latest Duo Mobile app version requires:

  • iPhone & iPad: iOS/iPadOS 16.0 or newer
  • Android: Android 12 or newer

To check your version:

  • iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings, then General, then About, then iOS Version
  • Android: Go to Settings, then About Phone, then Android Version

If your device is too old

You have three options:

  1. Use a different device — Install Duo Mobile on another smartphone or tablet that meets the requirements
  2. Create backup passcodes — Generate them before March 31 (Learn how to generate backup passcodes)
  3. Get a Duo security key fob — Request one from your Human Resources office, your local IT department or from the DoIT Help Desk

Frequently asked questions

Why is this happening?

Duo is ending support for older versions to improve security. Outdated versions won’t receive security updates and will have compatibility problems.

Duo Mobile app menu on iPhone with version number 4.103.0.1436.1 highlighted at the bottom
Your Duo Mobile app version number must be 4.85.0 or higher to continue working after March 31, 2026.

What happens if I don’t update?

After March 31, 2026, you won’t be able to log in to university systems that require multifactor authentication, including:

  • Microsoft 365 apps
  • Zoom
  • Canvas courses
  • HR and payroll systems
  • VPN

You’ll need to use backup passcodes or a Duo security key fob instead.

How do I check my app version?

  1. Open the Duo Mobile app on your mobile device
  2. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner
  3. The app version will be displayed in the bottom left corner
  4. If it shows a version earlier than 4.85.0, update now

Note: Version numbers can be tricky. The number 4.104.0 is newer than 4.85.0 because you compare each section separately (4 = 4, then 104 > 85).

Can I keep using my current phone?

Yes, if your device can run at a minimum iOS 16.0 or Android 12. If not, use a different device or an alternative authentication method.

I updated — what’s next?

Nothing. You’re ready to go.
