What’s happening
Kaltura – New captioning features
Beginning August 24, 2026, Kaltura began adding human-generated captions and computer-generated extended audio descriptions for all videos if you:
- Embed a video in your Canvas course.
- Add a video to the Kaltura Media Gallery in Canvas.
- Change a video’s publication setting in Kaltura MediaSpace from Private to Unlisted or Published.
Turnaround for these captions and extended audio descriptions is four days. For more details and to learn about exceptions to this process, refer to How Human Captioning and Machine Extended Audio Descriptions Work.
In addition, all media uploaded to Kaltura will still receive automatic machine captions to bridge the gap until human captions are available. To edit captions, refer to How to Edit Captions in Kaltura MediaSpace.
