NetID Login now available in Claude — what it means for your account

If you have a Claude AI account linked to your @wisc.edu email address, you’ll see a new “Continue with SSO” option the next time you log in. Here’s what this change means for your Claude account.

On Nov. 2, UW–Madison enabled single sign-on (SSO) for Claude accounts linked to @wisc.edu email addresses. SSO lets you log in with your NetID and Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

When you log in with an @wisc.edu email address, Claude shows two options:

  • Continue with SSO: Logs you in with NetID Login and Duo MFA.
  • Continue with email: Sends an expiring login code to your email, as before.

Both options open the same account.

What this means for your Claude account

Adding the SSO login option improves your login security without changing your Claude account.

SSO login:

  • Adds NetID Login and Duo MFA security to how you log in, making it harder for someone to steal your account.
  • Opens the same account you have now, with your chat history, projects and paid subscription.

SSO login does not:

  • Add extra data or privacy protections to your personal account.
  • Give the university access to your account. UW can’t access personal Claude accounts.
  • Change your account, plan or subscription.

What to do

Existing accounts

Choose “Continue with SSO” the next time you log in to Claude to use your NetID and Duo MFA.

New accounts

Use a personal email to register a new Claude account for personal use. Do not use your @wisc.edu email address.

Why use a personal email? Anthropic doesn’t allow Claude account holders to change their registered email. Using a personal address ensures you keep your access if you leave UW. That includes accounts created via the Google and Apple login buttons.

UW will turn off the “Continue with email” option later this year, so switching how you log in to your account now prepares you for that change.
