Removing Unused Java

Oracle has recently made a change to their licensing for Oracle Java Standard Edition (SE) that affects standalone installations of Java 8 currently deployed amongst departmentally supported computers. As Java 8 is only used by a subset of machines in our environment, Departmental Support is working to remove unused installations of Oracle Java to ensure license compliance with Oracle.  On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, we plan to uninstall Java installations identified as inactive alongside our usual monthly updates.

As part of this process, we will be enabling an additional self-service tool called BigFix Offers to allow for reinstallation of Java if it is still required. Please see our KB document for additional information on this process and the future of Java 8 SE on departmental machines, including unaffected usages of Oracle Java.
