Microsoft Copilot
Last updated:
Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s generative AI assistant. It combines large language models (LLMs), enterprise data protection and grounding from web data to help users find information, create content and complete tasks.
UW–Madison offers two versions of Copilot:
- Microsoft Copilot Chat: free for all students, faculty and staff
- Microsoft Copilot Premium: an extra license that departments can purchase for faculty and staff use
You are responsible for following UW–Madison and Universities of Wisconsin policies when using Copilot and other generative AI services. No one is required to use AI tools.
Copilot Chat
Copilot Chat is free for all UW–Madison students, faculty and staff. When you sign in with your NetID, you get enterprise data protection, which means Microsoft doesn’t use what you enter to train its AI models. Copilot Chat works with web searches and files you upload.
