Network maintenance continues Jan 16

DoIT Network Services made good progress on updating critical network infrastructure last weekend. However, due to a few complications that arose, we were not able to complete all the needed updates. Therefore, Network Services will need to perform additional maintenance on a number of network devices this Sunday, January 16, from midnight until 4am.

Impact

This work will impact devices on the Distributed Datacenter Network (DDN) as well as the Research Backbone Network (RBN). DDN impact will be only to devices that are in the Medical Foundation Centennial Building (MFCOB) and OneNeck data centers.

Device upgrades will be sequenced to minimize impact for services connected across High Availability pairs. However, there will be noticeable networking impact for hosts connected to the devices included in this upgrade.

Recommendation

It is strongly recommended that application, network, and server administrators prepare for the worst-case interruption and make preparations to test and recover their services following this maintenance.

Services that have difficulty recovering from network loss (NFS, etc.) should be monitored by their affected administrators. Consider proactively taking down any services that you consider critical or will result in significant work due to a sustained network loss.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. This maintenance will result in improved traffic performance on our networks, and we thank you in advance for your understanding and patience during these service disruptions. For additional information and the latest updates, please see the outage posting for this maintenance.

For questions about this maintenance, please email changemanagement@doit.wisc.edu.

Thank you for your patience as we perform this needed work.
