Modifications to Java Software

Tomorrow, DoIT Communications will send the following message to 181 DoIT Supported workstation owners. On Tuesday, March 30th, we will uninstall Oracle Java on these computers and install AdoptOpenJDK, an open-source alternative. The workstations identified have not used Oracle Java in recent history, but we are communicating this change in the interest of transparency and in case they rely on Java for some processes.

This spreadsheet contains a list with the NetIDs of the individuals who will receive this communication.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Dan Hughes, Project Manager, at daniel.hughes@wisc.edu or the DoIT Help Desk at support@doit.wisc.edu or 608-264-4357.

Sent by DoIT Communications on behalf of Departmental Support to customers with Oracle Java on DS-supported machines.

Dear Departmental Support Customers,

Your computer has an installation of Oracle JRE and/or Oracle Java Web Start that was not used between December 16th, 2020 – February 16th, 2021. As a result, on Tuesday, March 30th, they will be uninstalled from your computer and replaced with AdoptOpenJDK, an open-source alternative. The uninstall and install process will be automatic and will run in the background. You do not have to do anything.

Departmental Support is working to remove unused installations of Oracle Java to ensure license compliance. Please see our KB for additional information on Oracle’s Java SE license changes and the future of Oracle Java on departmental machines.

If you have any additional questions or issues with applications dependent on Java after March 30th, please contact DoIT Departmental Support via the Help Desk at support@doit.wisc.edu or 608-264-4357.

Thank you,

DoIT Departmental Support
