December 2025 progress update

Current Progress

Smart Access work is active and advancing. December progress is focused on improving visibility and enabling data-informed decisions using existing capabilities.

VPN Audit-Mode Status

Device data analysis work continues. This KB article shares details on what we are looking at.

  • Audit-mode enabled:
    • Cybersecurity VPN
    • DoIT VPN
  • Next milestone:
    • All WiscVPN services – audit-mode enabled December 22, 2025

Audit-mode is being used to evaluate device-related signals already available through VPN connections. This work is focused on analysis and understanding, not enforcement.

How This Fits the Smart Access Approach

This work advances the Devices pillar and Visibility & Analytics capability of the CISA Zero Trust Maturity Model (ZTMM) and reflects Smart Access’s data-informed approach to Zero Trust maturity.

Visibility first → informed decisions → intentional next steps.

Program Capacity: Business Analyst Added

Smart Access has added a full-time Business Analyst to support the program’s current phase of work.

This role is focused on:

  • Assessing the current state of Smart Access – related capabilities, integrations, and processes
  • Identifying gaps and opportunities across existing tools and services
  • Helping define strategic next steps that prioritize value realization and measurable impact

As the program focuses on using what the university already has, this role is critical to turning data and analysis into concrete, prioritized work.

What’s Next

  • Continue VPN audit data analysis
  • Use findings to inform prioritization and design discussions
  • Share additional updates as next steps are defined
