This page introduces common governance models and explains how to use the DACI framework to clarify decision-making, improve accountability, and reduce delays in cross-functional projects.
What is a governance model?
A governance model is a framework that defines how decisions are made, who is responsible, and how work moves forward within a project or organization.
Why it matters
- Reduces confusion about ownership
- Speeds up decision-making
- Improves transparency across teams
DACI
One commonly used governance model is DACI, which helps teams clarify roles in decision-making so projects can move forward efficiently. DACI stands for Driver, Approver, Contributor, and Informed. It is a decision-making framework that clarifies roles by defining who leads the work, who makes the final decision, who provides input, and who needs to be kept informed.
When to use DACI
Use DACI when your project or decision-making situation meets one or more of the following:
- Decisions involve multiple departments: When input or approval is needed from people in different teams, DACI clarifies roles and avoids confusion.
- Ownership is unclear: If no one knows who is responsible for making the final call, DACI defines clear accountability.
- Work is delayed due to approval ambiguity: When tasks stall because it’s not clear who decides, DACI streamlines the process.
- Projects span more than two teams: For cross-functional initiatives, DACI ensures everyone knows their role and who to consult.
How to use DACI
Follow these steps to apply DACI effectively in your project:
- Identify the decision: Clearly define what needs to be decided, including the scope and desired outcome.
- Assign DACI roles: Determine who is Driver, Approver, Contributors, and Informed, and clarify responsibilities.
- Document and share roles: Record the DACI roles in meeting notes or project documents, share them with all participants, and confirm the Approver understands their responsibility.
- Make the decision: Contributors provide input, the Approver makes the final decision, and the Driver communicates the outcome to all Informed stakeholders to ensure alignment.
