If you are looking for a little different quiz or test experience in Canvas, try the newly available Canvas quizzing tool, New Quizzes. New Quizzes benefits include:
- Improved process to provide student accommodations
- Smoother settings experience
- More efficient Item Banks for randomizing quizzes and easily pulling questions into a quiz
To understand the differences between New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes features, see this comparison document. Canvas will also continue to develop and improve New Quizzes as it works to eventually make it their primary quizzing engine in the future.
The Classic Quizzes tool is still available, so you can use New Quizzes selectively if you’d like to try it out. After you enable New Quizzes in your course, you can choose to create a Classic or New quiz on a quiz-by-quiz basis. The student experience with New Quizzes is similar enough that students often don’t notice the difference between Classic and New Quizzes, making it easy to mix New and Classic Quizzes in your course. Get familiar with Canvas’s newest quizzing tool without having to redo your already-created Canvas assessments!
Keep in mind that New Quizzes has a very different workflow and user interface for instructors building a quiz. Perhaps the biggest change is how Item Banks in New Quizzes work v. Question Banks in Classic Quizzes. There are also several known issues with New Quizzes including 2 of its question types being inaccessible for students who use screen readers and other assistive technology.
Feel free to reach out to your local instructional technologist, or contact the DoIT Help Desk and ask to meet with a Learn@UW consultant for help getting familiar with and using New Quizzes.
