Data Privacy Week 2025

Data privacy week

Data Privacy Week developed out of Data Privacy Day. Celebrated each January 28th, it’s a time to raise awareness about privacy and data protection, and the ways they affect us as employees and citizens.

7 ways to practice data privacy

What Does Privacy Mean at UW–‍Madison?

UW–‍Madison is invested in data privacy and our websites have a lot to share! Our Privacy Notice, Cookies and Tracking Notice, and GDPR Notice explain how our websites process data and protect user privacy. The Universities of Wisconsin has a privacy policy to establish a foundation for the privacy of personal data throughout the Universities of Wisconsin.

Curious about AI? See the tools available to you as a UW employee and read our Chief Information Security Officer’s Guidance on the Use Of Generative AI. Those who interact with students will learn a lot from our Generative AI in Teaching content.

Work from home? There are special privacy and security considerations that go along with remote work. Check out this guidance to make your remote workplace a safe place for our data.

Need an expert? Our faculty and staff are authorities in their fields, and we have privacy experts across campus ready to share information and build the knowledge we need to understand how data privacy impacts us, our students, and the world. Check out some of the ways that our faculty, staff, and students are engaging this topic.

Wondering how to protect student data? A big part of data privacy at UW is led by the Office of the Registrar. Responsible for student data, it is a central campus resource for FERPA information.

Why go enterprise? As employees, we have the ability to protect our privacy and the privacy of others through basic data privacy practices. Here’s one that’s simple, but has a big impact: use only enterprise or UW vetted tools at work. If you’re using a “free” service online, you’re providing the vendor access to and use of all the data you put in. Remember, it’s free because whatever small cost there is to provide the platform to you, the company believes they make significantly more from the data gold they mine from you. Read what the Office of Legal Affairs wants you to know about keeping our data safe.

Questions? For additional privacy related questions, contact Claire Dalle Molle. For security questions, please reach out to your unit’s security coordinator.
