The UW–Madison Office of Cybersecurity and UW–Madison Graduate School are aware of a phone scam that is active on campus.
The phone call “spoofs” the Graduate School phone number, which means that it appears to come from the Graduate School but does not. The person on the phone tells targeted individuals that their credit card was used out of state and requests that those individuals verify their credit card number.
This is NOT a legitimate phone message. Please do not share any information with anyone who calls you requesting sensitive information. The UW–Madison Graduate School will never call you asking you to give up credit card information, login credentials or other sensitive information. If you receive a call like this, please just hang up. If you feel like you’ve been a victim and you shared financial and other sensitive information, please contact the UW–Madison Police Department.
