This summer, Honorlock added a new opt-in feature: Side-Angle Camera/Dual Camera. 

How does this feature work?

This feature enables Honorlock to use a second camera to provide a wider, multi-angle view of the test environment and behaviors. For example, the external webcam placed on a student’s left or right side would capture the profile of their face, their desk or workspace, and computer screen.

Why is it not available at UW-Madison?

The feature is currently in a beta/pre-release state and there are several considerations that need to be addressed before UW-Madison could make it available for ongoing use.

There are important accessibility, equity, and privacy factors that require further review. The feature requires students to use a secondary device, which raises questions about both accessibility and equitable access to the necessary technology. The additional camera view also raises privacy considerations because it captures more of a student’s physical environment than the existing proctoring configuration.

Academic Technology and the Student Learning Assessment Office are taking time during the fall semester to evaluate the feature and consult with relevant UW–Madison stakeholders. As a result, the Honorlock Side-Angle Camera/Dual Camera feature is not available at this time. We are not aware of an approved alternative that provides the same side-angle/dual camera functionality.

What happens next?

A decision about whether the feature can be supported is anticipated for spring 2027. 

Instructors can continue to use Honorlock’s existing proctoring capabilities to support secure online assessments. The current set of Honorlock features provides instructors with tools to administer proctored exams and promote academic integrity in courses where online proctoring is appropriate.
