An accomplished computationalist, administrator and advocate for access to higher education, Provost Isbell began serving as UW’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in August. Before that, he served as Dean and John P. Imlay, Jr. Chair of the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Isbell’s academic expertise is in machine learning and artificial intelligence, his passions since childhood. He encourages people to think beyond the loaded buzzword AI has become and work to create human-centered AI applications. Isbell believes strongly that higher education — particularly research universities — should help people engage deeply in what it means to be an active and productive citizen. His work has garnered international recognition and numerous awards and has been featured in technical collections, The New York Times, the Washington Post and Netflix.
Major initiatives of the Office of the Provost include the Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring; faculty recruitment and retention; campus climate; support for diversity, equity and inclusion on campus; increasing the number of online bachelor’s degree programs; and increasing need-based scholarship aid and assistance for first-generation students.
We hope you’ll join us to hear Provost Isbell’s vision for leveraging technology and education to develop the skills and mindsets needed to tackle society’s greatest challenges. Register today to benefit from his insights on December 5.
