Microsoft Copilot Premium now available for departments to purchase
UW–Madison departments can now buy Microsoft Copilot Premium licenses for faculty and staff.
Copilot Premium (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot) adds Microsoft’s AI assistant to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams and works with your Microsoft email, calendar and files.
Order licenses through the Campus Software Library. Licenses arrive about two weeks after you order.
A tier above Copilot Chat
The free version, Microsoft Copilot Chat, remains available to all students and employees. It works only with web searches and files you upload.
Copilot Premium finds and uses your email, files and calendar for you, and it can see only content you already have access to.
Who can get it and what it costs
- Eligibility: Faculty and staff with a paid UW–Madison appointment
- Cost: $201.36 per license per year, paid with department funds
- Term: Licenses run Nov. 1 through Oct. 31 each year
Required training: All Copilot Premium users must complete the required training on data governance and responsible use. It‘s an interactive online course hosted in Workday and takes about 30 minutes to complete.
What data you can use
Copilot Premium is approved for public, internal and sensitive university data, including student data protected by FERPA.
Copilot Premium isn’t yet approved for restricted university data, such as health data protected by HIPAA. We anticipate approval for restricted data use in early 2027. Learn more about data classification.
