Microsoft OneDrive storage quotas coming soon

Beginning April 16, 2026, UW–‍Madison Microsoft 365 accounts will transition from 2 TB storage to defined storage quotas. This change helps to ensure long-term service stability and meets new requirements from Microsoft.

What to know

  • No action needed: Starting April 16, a custom storage quota will be applied to existing accounts in order to accommodate current storage plus a buffer to create and add new files.
  • How to request more storage: If accounts reach their storage quota after April 16, a request form for additional storage will be available in the OneDrive storage KnowledgeBase article.
  • Unaffected services: This change will not affect other Microsoft services such as SharePoint, email, and more.

What’s next

The UW–‍Madison Microsoft 365 team will send an email reminder to individuals with large storage accounts prior to the April 16 launch date. In the meantime, employees can visit the OneDrive storage KnowledgeBase article for additional details.
