Minimize your cyber risk: Update your software

Technology is an ever-evolving entity. The dial-up modems of yesteryear (so exciting and marvelous at the time!) now seem as antiquated as the telegraph, when compared to the speed and efficiency of fiber internet. And with that technological advancement comes the growth of both cybercrime and security enhancements.

In 2022, the damage created by cybercrime topped $6 trillion. Hackers and other cybercriminals are constantly looking for ways to breach systems or accounts. One way to thwart their efforts is to make your devices as secure as possible by installing the latest security patches and updates.

Here are 4 tips for making sure your software is always up to date:

  1. Turn on automatic updates. Most devices allow you to turn on automatic updates so that when an update becomes available from the device, software or app creator, it will automatically be installed.
  2. Download software straight from the source. You wouldn’t take candy from a stranger, so don’t install an app from one, either. Before downloading software or an app update on your personal devices, be sure it’s coming from a verified source. If you’re using a UW–Madison-owned device, contact your IT administrator before downloading any software.
  3. Beware the fakeout. Once in a while, you may encounter a pop-up window that insists you’re missing a key update and need to download it immediately. Don’t do it. Don’t click any buttons on these pop-ups and be sure to close your browser.
  4. Check for updates regularly. Even if you have automatic updates turned on, try to make updating your device, software and apps a regular part of your cyber routine.
