On June 1, 2023, a 25 GB quota was applied to all My Drive and shared drives using less than 25 GB. Accounts over the 25 GB default quota were given a larger, temporary quota—giving users time to reduce their storage. Temporary quotas will expire May 31, 2024.
Why is it important to reduce my storage?
Storage management is a shared responsibility among all members of our university community. When Google introduced a new license and storage model, we shifted from unlimited to limited storage. Our goal is to continue providing this service while also decreasing our usage. By reducing your storage, you help shrink our total data footprint.
We recognize Google Workspace is a valuable tool for collaboration, productivity and file-sharing. As we work through this project, we will continue balancing the needs of the campus community while also managing new costs and storage restrictions presented to the university.
Recommendations for reducing storage
- View your existing My Drive storage usage.
- View shared drives you manage by viewing its membership.
- View your shared drive storage usage.
- Review files and delete items that are no longer needed.
- Move backup/archival files to another storage provider.
- Discuss your use case with the project team. Stop by virtual office hours or send them an email.
- If needed, request a long-term storage exception. Learn more by visiting our “Prepare for upcoming Google Workspace Quotas” KB.
What happens if I don’t take any action?
If no action is taken by May 31, 2024 your account will be assigned the default 25 GB storage quota. You will not be able to sync or upload new files until you reduce your storage or submit a long-term exception request. Learn more about set storage limits.
