Beginning the week of December 2, the Office of Cybersecurity will transition current LastPass users to 1Password, the new recommended password manager. 2 email communications have already been sent to those with an active LastPass account.
Why is this transition happening?
Our decision to switch to 1Password stems from its:
- Excellent track record in safeguarding sensitive data
- User-friendly interface
- Robust set of features
All of these elements align with the broad range of security and convenience needs at UW–Madison.
Transition timeline
Between December 2 and December 6, current LastPass users will receive instructions for setting up a 1Password account and migrating existing LastPass passwords to the new system. Users will have until May 2025 to migrate their passwords. Additional details on migration can be found in the 1Password KnowledgeBase (KB) article.
Current 1Password users
Current 1Password accounts will not be affected by this transition. UW–Madison has its own instance of 1Password, uw-madison.1password.com, where users will be added. A personal 1Password account using a wisc.edu email address will remain a personal account, even if a 1Password account is created with the same wisc.edu email. Users can log in to multiple 1Password accounts at the same time to easily access university and personal passwords.
Users will also be able to redeem a free 1Password families account once their university account is active. This can be applied to an existing 1Password personal account.
