What happens to your email & other IT services after graduation?

Graduating in May? Congratulations! Before “Pomp and Circumstance” plays, please review the information below and take action to prepare for access changes and account deactivations.

Take action before you lose access to IT services

After graduation, your access to university IT services will expire. You don’t lose access immediately, but you should back up your files now—before your account is deactivated.

Here’s what to do:

  • Review the Leaving the University KnowledgeBase article
  • Check the service deactivation timeline to see how much time you have to move your data
  • Move or back up any files or data you want to keep
  • See the “What should I do with my data” section of the KB for instructions of how to move files and data

Future you will appreciate having those files safe and sound!

More details

  • You’ll receive 4 email reminders starting 90 days before your email account is deactivated.
  • If you are forwarding your UW–‍Madison email to another account, this will stop when your account is deactivated.
  • Staying on as faculty or staff, or continuing as a graduate or professional student after graduating? Welcome aboard! You will remain eligible for access to UW–‍Madison IT services, and will keep the same email address and all of your data.

Please note the KnowledgeBase article reflects our current policies regarding IT services after graduation. These policies can change at any time. You will be notified if changes occur.
