Grackle Workspace (free accessibility checker)

Last updated on November 19, 2024

Grackle Workspace is a suite of extensions to Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. When added, each extension automatically checks for accessibility issues and guides users through correcting them.

These add-ons are available to all of UW–‍Madison at no cost.  Install each add-on individually through the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Please note: Since Grackle Workspace is licensed for @wisc.edu accounts only, DoIT recommends that users access these add-ons with a Chrome profile to avoid being asked to sign in every time.

Benefits

  • Easy to install and use
  • Can be used on any device where you are signed in to Google with your @wisc.edu account
  • Can help you learn more about best practices for digital accessibility
  • Enables you to export documents as tagged PDFs

Getting started

In any Google Doc:

  1. Navigate to Extensions in the document’s menu bar (note: these add-ons are not Chrome extensions).
  2. Select Add-ons, then Get Add-ons.
  3. Search for “Grackle” in the Google Workspace marketplace. Grackle Docs should be the first extension in the search results.
