SharePoint in Microsoft 365 provides the content services for all files in Microsoft 365, including files stored and shared within Teams, Groups, and Outlook. SharePoint manages files (including permissions management), and powers content collaboration across the Microsoft 365 suite of services. SharePoint enables sites, portals, news, pages, lists, and a platform for business apps.

- Important note about working with Protected Health Information (PHI): SharePoint Online should not be used by UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students interacting with electronic PHI protected by HIPAA regulations. If you are a part of the UW–Madison health care component, contact your HIPAA privacy or security coordinator with questions about the applications best suited for creating, storing, and sharing PHI.

Getting Started with SharePoint Online

- All UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students are eligible to create SharePoint content and collaborate on content shared with them via SharePoint Online via their NetID login.
- Site owners are responsible for the content and data created and shared within their SharePoint Online sites.
