Digital accessibility liaisons support the university’s mission of creating a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone, including people with disabilities. By creating and using accessible digital tools and resources, we can ensure that people with disabilities have full, equal, and independent access to the same information, services, and technology as people without disabilities.
The liaison network is intended to facilitate communication about digital accessibility between distributed units, central leadership, and the Center for User Experience (UX).
Find your liaison
Search the digital accessibility liaison directory to find contact information for any liaisons in your unit.
Interested in joining the network to support digital accessibility efforts at UW–Madison? Talk with your supervisor about becoming a liaison, then fill out the digital accessibility liaison registration Google Form.
Digital accessibility liaison role
The role of liaisons is to advocate for digital accessibility in their units and connect people to resources where they can learn more. Liaisons are supporters, connectors, and communicators.
Depending on a liaison’s existing job responsibilities and their unit’s needs, the day-to-day work in the digital accessibility space will be different for every liaison.
Examples of what liaisons may do:
- Collaborate with the Center for UX on a proactive approach to their unit’s digital accessibility efforts
- Communicate with the Center for UX and the Office of Compliance about reported digital accessibility barriers or questions
- Connect product/service owners in their unit with the Center for UX to evaluate digital tools and resources for accessibility
- Share resources with colleagues, such as the Make It Accessible guides, ADA’s digital accessibility requirements, or presentations on accessibility tips
Liaisons are not expected to:
- Act as a compliance officer or be responsible for any legal oversight of their unit
- Determine what digital tools and resources their unit uses or procures, unless this work is part of their existing job responsibilities
- Perform official accessibility evaluations for their unit
Resources for liaisons
If you are in a unit with multiple liaisons, please coordinate your work to avoid duplicative efforts. Consider collaborating with liaisons in other units as time and interest permits.
After registering to become a liaison, you will be:
- Invited to complete a training in Canvas about the liaison role
- Added to the digital accessibility liaison directory, where you can discover other liaisons across the university
- Added to the Digital Accessibility Community of Practice, where you can connect with the Center for UX, other liaisons, and content creators and developers across the university with interest and expertise in digital accessibility
Additional resources and learning opportunities are listed on the Resources for liaisons page.
The Center for User Experience
At the Center for User Experience, we are committed to working with you to make digital spaces more accessible, usable and inclusive for all students, faculty and staff at UW–Madison.
