Systems Engineering & Operations

SEO designs, operates and maintains the campus IT infrastructure. SEO also:

  • Provides the computing infrastructure and service management that powers campus applications including the My UW Madison portal, email and calendaring systems and Student Information System (SIS).
  • Manages and maintain the 24 x 7 UW–‍Madison Data center operations, including virtualization, mass storage, backup and disaster recovery.
  • Provides full printing resources through a combination of in-house and external vendors.

What we do

Data Center Strategy and Operations

Responsible for the environmental infrastructure of the UW Madison Data Center. We take care of the HVAC, power management and UPS, physical security systems, fire suppression and water detection, and rack layout and racking of servers.

Applications and Systems Engineering

Responsible for research, design and system administration for all the hardware systems resident in the data center(s). In addition, ASE is the primary design and support technologists for mass storage, backup and disaster recovery infrastructures.

Specialized Infrastructure Management Services

Provides IT infrastructure solutions, support, and management for customers.  SIMS will consult with customers to understand their requirements, develop solutions, and implement and manage them on their behalf.  SIMS will match existing shared IT services to their needs or find new solutions when needed.

Digital Publishing & Printing Services

Through a combination of in-house equipment and external vendors, we can service all your printing needs. We produce a wide variety of booklets, brochures, forms, envelopes, cards, flyers, posters, tickets, letterheads, newsletters, business cards, and even custom textbooks and course packets.

Systems and Network Control Center

Responsible for the manning and Operation of the 24×7 data center including monitoring over 400 central servers and the network operations control for the Campus backbone network.

DoIT Cloud & Security Engineering

The Public Cloud Team is responsible for the campus Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform GCP)utilities. The Smart Access Team is working to apply the principles of zero trust to new services that enhance UW–Madison’s security posture.

Solutions Engineering

Provides applications and systems architecture, design, engineering and administration services to campus. SE maintains Linux servers, Windows servers, Microsoft SQL Server databases, and cloud computing systems. SE also performs enterprise firewall rules management, partners with Cybersecurity on compliance, and provides incident response services that include on-call systems support.

IT Service Management

DoIT IT Service Management reduces risk to IT services by providing procedures, processes and tools for delivery and operations of campus IT services. IT Service Management works with IT service teams to understand the relationships between components of IT services and alert staff of system workload increases, diminished capacities and outages. IT Service Management aggregates data from different IT system sources which support IT services and communicates service status publicly via the Outages pages. IT Service Management prepares for DoIT service continuity in case of an unplanned disruption.
