Final grade submissions: Canvas tips for UW–‍Madison instructors

As the semester draws to a close, instructors are turning their eyes towards the all-important final grading for their courses. This article provides some helpful reminders related to the process of submitting final grades from Canvas into the MyUW Faculty Center.

As a first step, review “Canvas – Calculating Final Grades” to ensure your Canvas gradebook is set up and ready to go.

For instructors with smaller class sizes (fewer than 50), manually entering grades directly into the Faculty Center is the recommended method.

For instructors of large-enrollment courses, Learn@UW–‍Madison recommends using the Faculty Center Grade Prep Tool. This tool is designed to help instructors of large-enrollment courses easily and accurately transfer their final grades into the Faculty Center. Here’s how it works:

  1. The instructor exports the course grade roster from the Faculty Center.
  2. The instructor uses this tool in Canvas to a) import the exported grade roster, b) populate the roster with grades from the Canvas gradebook, and c) export a new-and-improved version of that grade roster, now with all the grades.
  3. The instructor returns to the Faculty Center and imports this new grade roster.

This tool will work for courses of any size. All instructors are welcome to use it. However, considering the steps involved, the true time-saving value of the tool won’t be realized until an instructor is entering grades for more than 50 students.
