The University of Wisconsin–Madison has announced the recipients of its annual microgrant program, aimed at advancing data-empowered education practices (DEEP). These grants, administered by the Learning Analytics Center of Excellence (LACE) in partnership with the Division of Teaching and Learning (DTL), empower faculty and instructional staff to explore innovative ways of supporting student success through data analysis.
Exploring Online Course Engagement: Click, Learn, Thrive
The 2024 microgrant program centers around a critical question: How does engagement with online course content impact student performance? To address this, six exceptional projects have been funded, spanning diverse disciplines and educational contexts. They are as follows:

- Jonathan Galimore, Psychology -College of Letters & Sciences
- Katie Vermillion Kalmon, Genetics- College of Agriculture & Life Sciences
- Lindy Stoll and Ace Hilliard, Professional Master’s Certificate Programs-School of Pharmacy
- Heidi Evans and Andrea Poulos, Department of English, Program in ESL-College of Letters & Sciences
- Angela Kita and Amanda Smith, Industrial System Engineering and Center for Engineering Education- College of Engineering
Collaborating with a Data Architect
All microgrant recipients will collaborate closely with a data architect to understand the intricacies of data within their online course content. Whether the course is delivered online, in a hybrid format, or in-person, these initiatives promise to enrich student experiences and contribute to a data-informed educational landscape.
The microgrant applications were due on April 21, 2024, and each recipient will receive a grant amount of $2000. As these projects unfold, we anticipate exciting insights that will help support and shape academic success at UW–Madison.
