Campus Active Directory

Active Directory baseline implementation & migration resources

If you are the administrator of a distributed Active Directory (AD) domain within the university, you may have questions relating to baseline implementation or the migration to Campus Active Directory. The Campus Active Directory Services (CADS) team has developed a variety of resources available to support you in these efforts and they strongly encourage you to take advantage of any and all of them.

Baseline support

Office hours

Domain administrators across UW–Madison can now attend weekly office hours hosted by the CADS team, to learn about and discuss the implementation of the Distributed Active Directory baseline standards (Source: docs.google.com). These office hours will be held at 3pm every Wednesday (Source: teams.microsoft.com) through the end of February.

Email

Please reach out Sabrina Messer (sabrina.messer@wisc.edu), the C2E program manager, if you:

  • Are unable to implement an individual baseline by February 28, 2023
  • Are unable to implement all baselines by February 28, 2023
  • Have an alternate means of complying with the baseline

Migration support

Quest pilot

The CADS team is currently investigating the use of Quest Binary Tree Migrator Pro (Source: binarytree.com) as a way to simplify domain migrations. The pilot group is SMPH Shared Services IT and the team is actively creating detailed documentation that can be leveraged for future migrations.

Consultative support

Please reach out to activedirectory@office365.wisc.edu with any migration-related questions.

Self assessment and inventory

Submit your AD needs and unique use cases by noting them in the Migration scheduleself assessed tab of this spreadsheet. If you aren’t sure if the technology you’re using is supported by CAD, please include that in the spreadsheet! If you are using a unique technology or have a unique (or non-standard) configuration, please include that in the spreadsheet, as well. We ask that you include as many details as possible to help us help you in the most efficient and effective way.

General AD support

Microsoft Teams channel

If you are an AD administrator on campus, don’t hesitate to join the Microsoft Teams Active Directory community channel, where you can ask questions to the AD community or simply read through the discussions sparked by your peers. Request to join the Team channel here (Source: teams.microsoft.com)

Background

Campus Active Directory Services (Source: it.wisc.edu) enables participating departments to take advantage of centralized NetID-based authentication, while allowing for delegated administration of local resources. This allows departmental IT administrators to assign group policies, manage security groups and deploy software while taking advantage of the convenience of NetID authentication and authorization using institutional or locally-maintained data.
