LACE recognized in inaugural 2022 Horizon data and analytics report

The Learning Analytics Center of Excellence (LACE) is proud to be accepted as an exemplar for data governance in the inaugural 2022 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report | Data and Analytics Edition. This report profiles “important trends and key technologies and practices shaping the future of data and analytics, and envisions a number of scenarios and implications for that future.”

LACE was recognized for their contributions to the establishment of a stewarded data domain for teaching and learning data, overseen by the vice provost for teaching and learning. The formalization of the data domain provides immense opportunities for more holistically supporting our learners while providing an accountability structure that ensures appropriate governance and ethical use.

“We are excited to see UW‍–‍Madison recognized as an exemplar in the field,” said Kim Arnold, director of the Learning Analytics Center of Excellence. “We’ve experienced a dramatically increased need on campus for teaching and learning data, especially since the sudden move to online and hybrid classes in 2020. Since the domain was already formalized within the governance paradigm and we had proactively created Guiding Principles for Appropriate Use Data for Learning Analytics, we’ve been just ahead of the curve and it’s gratifying to see our work recognized by our peers.”

LACE provides expertise on how to leverage teaching and learning data to better support educational practices on campus. As a group, they focus on data-empowered educational practices including learning analytics, as well as stewardship of the teaching and learning data domain.

The new data and analytics edition of the Horizon report focuses specifically on emerging data and analytics practices in higher eddata that often drives institutional decision-making and strategic planning at colleges and universities. The Horizon report has been published for over 15 years, initially by the New Media Consortium, and since 2018 by EDUCAUSE.
