Network firewall work: September update

Cybersecurity to the Edge (C2E) is a broad set of initiatives focused on significantly reducing risk across the campus landscape. One of the high-priority efforts within C2E is improving campus network protection (aka “the firewall”). In July, the Network Firewall Advisory Group (NFWAG) C2E Badger team sent an update on their work targeting October 2022. You can read that update here (Source: it.wisc.edu).

Since that initial update, the team has made some additional progress.

  1. They have reviewed Network Firewall policy (UW-513) (Source: policy.wisc.edu) and made the recommendation to make no further changes.
  2. The team evaluated Network Firewall policy implementation plan (source: kb.wisc.edu) and determined that it should be archived as part of the initial Palo Alto rollout work. The Badger team is currently drafting best practices and workflows for longer term maintenance. Once the best practices document has been finalized, it will be published to the IT Policy page on it.wisc.edu.
  3. The team will continue working with key campus and vendor partners for fact-finding purposes, including engaging the Firewall admin user group and gathering feedback on best practices.
  4. Future efforts will include surveying key audiences on potential service needs, as well as training opportunities on the Palo Alto firewall.

Background

Cybersecurity to the edge (C2E) is a broad set of initiatives focused on significantly reducing risk across the campus landscape. One of the high-priority efforts within C2E is improving campus network protection (aka, the firewall). A small team of campus stakeholders, the Network Firewall Advisory Group (NFWAG) C2E Badger Team, are working together to draft a set of consistent and repeatable procedures and best practices to ensure that the university is poised to resist any future breach.
