Learn@UW Newsletter, week of July 19

What’s Happening?

Canvas – New Course Analytics Tool Coming to All Courses Tomorrow, July 20

A refreshed version of Canvas course Analytics, called “New Analytics,” has been available as an instructor opt-in feature in the UW–‍Madison Canvas instance. This Saturday, July 20, all Canvas courses will see the original course Analytics tool go away for good, replaced by New Analytics. New Analytics provides instructors with new data, more search capabilities, and the ability to message students directly from the page based on grade or participation. In addition, students can use New Analytics to see data about their grades, course activity, and communication. For details on New Analytics features, please refer to this guide from Instructure.

Canvas – Discussions/Announcements Redesign Coming to All Courses Tomorrow, July 20

On July 20, all UW–‍Madison Canvas courses will be permanently switched over to the redesigned version of “Discussions/Announcements.” This redesign has a notable impact on the appearance and behavior of both Canvas Discussions and Announcements. To see what’s changing, please refer to this website news article.

Engage – eReader Maintenance With Possible Service Interruption July 24

RedShelf, the vendor of the Engage eReader, will be performing planned maintenance on Wednesday, 7/24/2024 from 10:00pm – 11:00pm CST. During this maintenance window, users may experience brief interruptions in accessing the eReader and the RedShelf website. For more details about the purpose of this maintenance, please refer to this KnowledgeBase news article

Canvas – Changes to Syllabus & Course Summary Coming August 16

The Learn@UW–‍Madison team is streamlining syllabus options in the UW–‍Madison instance of Canvas. As a result, changes will be made on August 16 to the Course Summary tool as well as the HelioCampus AC Syllabus integration. Instructors and course designers will need to be aware of these changes and adjust their Canvas courses accordingly. For more information, please refer to this website news article.

Honorlock – Working with Scan ID When Name on ID and Name on Roster Are Different

In Honorlock, the Scan ID feature reads a student’s ID card to verify their identity. In instances where the the student’s name on the ID card does not match the student’s name in Canvas, Honorlock may prevent the student from accessing the exam. This situation often impacts students with changes in martial status or LGBTQIA students.

To address these situations, instructors may now use the Honorlock Accommodations field to request that Honorlock accept multiple names for students who require that accommodation. For further instructions, please refer to this KnowledgeBase article.

Atomic Assessments – Beta Test

Atomic Assessments is conducting a beta test of a revamped interface. Instructors can turn the beta interface on and off at will. To enable the beta interface, follow the instructions in this KnowledgeBase article. Feedback can be submitted to the DoIT Help Desk (per the linked KB article).

If you need support for Atomic Assessments, please contact the DoIT Help Desk. We also have several KnowledgeBase articles.

Learn@UW–‍Madison – Two New Training Sessions Added in August

Learn@UW–‍Madison is hosting several training sessions in August. This week we added two sessions of brand new training.

Getting Started with Top Hat – This course provides a great opportunity to learn about UW–‍Madison’s centrally supported student response system, Top Hat as This tool allows instructors to ask questions of their students, and receive and present the responses (in aggregate) in real time.

Canvas – Introduction to New Quizzes – For several years, Instructure has been developing the next-generation quizzing tool for Canvas called New Quizzes. UW–‍Madison is still not prepared to enable the tool site-wide, but we are beginning to conduct our own functionality and usability tests. If you are interested in getting a preview of the tool, these sessions are for you.

For dates and times, and to register, refer to the Upcoming events section, below.

Upcoming Events

HelioCampus AC Training

HelioCampus AC is UW–‍Madison’s enterprise course evaluation platform. The following training sessions are intended for our 150+ HelioCampus AC school and departmental administrators.

Click here to register for any of the sessions.

Clean Up NEW!

Running HelioCampus AC surveys for multiple years may result in a lot of “clutter”: outdated survey forms, defunct survey schedules, unwanted (unexpected?) survey instances. This new “Clean Up” session provides the opportunity to explore your school or department’s HelioCampus AC dashboards, and consider effective strategies to reclaim control of the content.
