Swag: If you buy it, will they come?

Have you ever gone to a conference and received a promotional item that really stood out? Designers on campus are often tasked with selecting and designing materials to help promote something. Often, these promotional items are distributed at conferences, job fairs and other events.

But how do you go about designing and purchasing swag at UW–‍Madison? What should you consider before placing an order?

At our June 30 UW Design Community session, Alison Caffrey joined us to talk about promotional materials. Alison is an instructional designer with the Instructional Design Collaborative in the College of Letters and Science. In her 15+ years on campus as a student, educator and librarian, she has helped groups design and select promotional materials for prospective students and professional conferences—and she has amassed quite the collection of stress balls and buttons. She knows that not everyone wants (or needs!) a pen with a logo on it.
